Fe500D vs Fe550 TMT Steel: Which Should You Use for Your AP/TG Home?

Fe500D or Fe550 TMT for coastal Andhra and Telangana homes? Ductility, corrosion resistance, cost per tonne, brand comparison, and the substitution trick contractors don't tell you.

Every family building a house in Kakinada, Vijayawada, Vizag, or anywhere else in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana runs into the same conversation with their contractor: "Sir, Fe500 vs Fe500D vs Fe550 — matter kaadu, ne strong ga untundi, adi teesukondi." Which is a polite way of saying whatever gives me the better margin. This guide gives you the actual technical answer, the cost delta in 2026 rupees, and the one substitution trick almost every first-time homeowner falls for.

What the number after "Fe" actually means

Fe stands for iron, and the number is the yield strength in N/mm² — the load per square millimetre the bar can take before it starts to deform permanently. Fe500 yields at 500 N/mm², Fe550 at 550, and so on. Higher number = stronger bar = you can use less of it to carry the same load.

The letter suffix — D — matters more than the number for coastal homes. D stands for ductility: the bar's ability to bend, stretch, and absorb shock without snapping. In seismic and coastal-corrosion contexts, ductility is what keeps a house standing when things go wrong.

The one-line answer: For 90% of AP/TG homes in 2026 — G+1, standard plot, coastal or interior — the right choice is Fe500D. Fe550 is a marketing upgrade a contractor might push; it saves a small amount of steel but reduces ductility, which is a bad trade near the coast.

Why the D grade matters specifically in AP and Telangana

Coastal corrosion (Kakinada, Vizag, Machilipatnam, Nellore)

Salt-laden air rusts steel faster than inland air. Once corrosion starts, rebar loses cross-section, which is exactly the "yield strength" the number promised. A more ductile bar (D grade) keeps more of its performance as it ages because it can flex under load instead of snapping at weakened points.

Seismic risk (all of AP and Telangana are Zone II or III)

AP and TG are considered low-to-moderate seismic. That does not mean no seismic — it means design for shock. Ductile steel bends and absorbs energy in an earthquake; brittle steel fails abruptly. For residential structures, the extra 4% elongation in D-grade is what turns "the plaster cracked" into "we lost the column".

Welding at the joint

High-carbon steel (which is how you get to higher strength cheaply) is harder to weld cleanly. D-grade rebar is chemistry-controlled to keep carbon low so joints — column-beam junctions, lap splices — actually develop full strength. Non-D bars often lose 15–30% strength at welds you cannot see.

For a 1,500 sqft G+1 home using ~6.5 tonnes of steel, the delta between Fe500 and Fe500D from a top-6 brand is roughly ₹20,000–₹28,000 over the whole build. That is 0.7–1% of the total. There is no world in which saving that amount is worth the durability trade-off in coastal AP.

Top-6 TMT brands available in AP/TG (2026)

These are the brands we spec by name. All meet or exceed IS 1786 for the D grades:

  1. Tata Tiscon SD — Premium, best QA. Available across AP/TG.
  2. JSW Neosteel — Strong distribution in coastal AP.
  3. Vizag Steel (RINL) — Local advantage in AP, quality is good, availability sometimes tight.
  4. SAIL SeQR — Reliable D grade, common in Hyderabad and North Telangana.
  5. Kamdhenu Nxt — Widely available, priced 3–5% below Tata.
  6. Rashmi TMT — Popular in Vizag and East Godavari; good price/performance.

Below these six, quality varies. There are excellent secondary brands (SriMetalliks, Sunvik, Prakash Steelage) and there are rebranded re-rolled bars sold under similar-sounding names. If your contractor names a brand you have not heard of, ask for the mill test certificate (MTC) — genuine brands provide one for every batch.

The substitution trick to watch for

This is the single most common padding move in AP/TG residential construction, and it costs the homeowner ₹15,000–₹40,000 without them ever noticing:

  1. You approve a quote that says "Fe500D, Tata Tiscon SD".
  2. On delivery, the truck brings Fe500 plain (no D) from a secondary brand, or Fe500D from a re-roller. Bundles look identical — same colour, same ribs, same size.
  3. The contractor bills you Tata Fe500D rates and pockets the delta.

When Fe550D is the right call

For a small subset of AP/TG homes, Fe550D genuinely makes sense:

Do not switch from Fe500D to Fe550D after the design is done. The redesign has to happen at the drawing-board stage; a switch during construction usually means the contractor wants to reduce total steel quantity to save cost, not because Fe550D is better for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fe500D available everywhere in AP/TG?

Yes. Every top-6 brand supplies Fe500D across both states. If a distributor claims "Fe500D is only in Vizag, we can only give you Fe500 here", that is a sales tactic — not reality.

Can I mix grades in one house?

Structurally yes, but never within the same element. You cannot mix Fe500 and Fe500D in the same column. What you can do: Fe500D for columns and beams, Fe415 for compound wall and staircase railings. Talk to your structural engineer before mixing.

Does the diameter (8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm) matter as much as the grade?

Different question, equally important. Diameter distribution is set by your structural design — an 8mm stirrup at 150mm centres is doing a different job from a 16mm main bar. Contractors sometimes substitute a smaller diameter than specified; the same "check the rolled marking" habit catches it.

What about "corrosion-resistant" (CRS) rebar for coastal homes?

CRS grades (Fe500D-CRS from Tata, JSW, or SAIL) add copper + chromium for 40–60% better rust resistance. Cost premium is ₹4–6/kg over regular Fe500D. Worth it for homes within 2 km of the coast (Kakinada beach, Vizag RK beach, Machilipatnam) or if your plot has high water table. Overkill 20+ km inland.

The bottom line

Default to Fe500D from a top-6 brand for your AP/TG home. Ask for the invoice + mill test certificate on every delivery. Read the roll marking on random bars in each bundle. That is the entire steel spec conversation. The ₹25,000 you might have "saved" with a lower grade is what you pay 10 years later when a beam near the balcony has to be jacketed. Not worth it.
